New Extension club for youngsters starts Feb. 8

Greene County Extension is partnering with local business to hold two new camps for Greene County youngsters in grades 5-8. WOLF (Well Organized Learning Fun) Club will present two winter camps after school on Wednesdays – HOWL and PACK: Robotics.

HOWL Camp (Healthy Organized Wellness and Living) is designed to promote healthy living habits. Cost to attend HOWL is $5 per session or $20 for all five sessions. Partners for these camps are Greene County Community Center and Springbrook Conservation Education Center. Youth will meet once a month to learn about a specific healthy living topic and can sign up for one or more dates. Sessions meet from 2 to 3 pm.

The schedule includes:

  • Yoga – Feb. 8, Greene County Community Center
  • Growing Your Own Herb Garden – March 8, Greene County Extension office
  • Get Moving: Kickboxing and More – April 12, Greene County Community Center
  • Cooking Healthy – May 10 at Greene County Extension office
  • Survival Skills – June 3, Springbrook State Park, time to be determined

PACK: Robotics Camp (Programming And Computer Knowledge) is a camp for high- level thinkers who want to be engaged in design and movement of electronic devices as well as some basic programming. Make a robot do the work for you!

Sessions will be held at the Greene County Extension office on Feb. 1, 15 and 22 from 2 to 4 pm. TechZone is the community partner for this activity and cost is $5 for all three sessions.

“These clubs are a great way for youth to get to know some of the local businesses in Greene County and our neighboring counties,” said Kayla Hyett, Greene County Extension’s county youth & 4-H coordinator. “HOWL provides youth with the understanding of living a healthy life and the skills to do so. PACK provides technology skills that youth can use throughout their life.”

Persons who want to register for one or both WOLF Club camps can contact the Iowa State University Extension & Outreach office at 104 W. Washington St in Jefferson, call 515-386-2138, or email Hyett at khyett@iastate.edu
